The new “Oregon Experience” documentary, “The 1934 Waterfront Strike: Solidarity on the Docks,” may chronicle a historic chapter of the labor movement that happened during the Great Depression. But the one-hour film, which airs on OPB Monday night, also provides a look back at issues that remain relevant today.
With workers at such companies as Starbucks and Amazon becoming more active in trying to form unions, “The 1434 Waterfront Strike: Solidarity on the Docks” is a reminder of why laborers have turned to unions, with the goal of finding a stronger voice in their working conditions. The film also demonstrates that controversy about the actions of those in Portland government, business circles, and police are nothing new.
